West of the Mississippi was a land waiting to be shaped into a country. No one had a greater hand in the expansion of the untamed west than the intrepid gold miner.

Men from all walks of life could not resist the allure of striking it rich. Nothing could stop them as they pushed onward in search of the precious metal. The fantasy of instant wealth called them from the shores of California to the bitter cold of Alaska. "Boom Towns" sprang up and provided everything the weary fortune seeker needed including whiskey and women.

They had to be equally as good with a gun as they were with a gold pan because disputes often arose over claims or with hostile Indians. Their hardened faces tell the story of the troubles they endured and the country they helped to raise.
